Llety Angell, Snowdonia National Park

Build a simple, natural home with open-plan, functional living spaces with a close connection to the local environment.

This unique site is located in the Snowdonia National Park in an old slate mining area and on the fringes of an extensive pine forest. It is a beautiful and inspiring environment, with glacial rivers, mountains, forests and remnants of the old slate mines.

Our first step was to visualise the design idea brought to us by our client into a 3D model, this helped bring the concept to life and also enabled us to rationalise the structure. The scale of the dwelling is indicative of the long lone stone barns that can be seen in fields in the immediate area, whilst the materials reflect the Welsh slate cladding found predominately on old miners cottages in the surrounding villages, and dark timber cladding links the dwelling to the forest that lies on its doorstep.

The design has two main points of orientation. One being to the south to maximise passive solar gains, and the other to the glacial river and pine forest that encloses the view to the west.
